Import/Export Conference Helps Firearms Industry Members Stay Informed of Law, Regulatory Issues

The 13th Annual Firearms Import/Export Conference is under way with a comprehensive agenda designed to help ensure that members of the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry stay informed of and in compliance with the extensive federal laws and regulations governing the import and export of their products. The two-day conference is a joint presentation of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the FAIR Trade Group and is being held at the Renaissance Downtown, Washington, D.C.

The conference started with a full panel of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) speakers from the Office of Enforcement Programs and Services, Firearms and Explosives Services Division, Imports Branch, NFA Branch, and Firearms Industry Programs Branch.

Later in the morning participants heard updates on the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty and the Census Bureau’s Automated Export System (AES). A series of round-table sessions are planned throughout the afternoon. On Wednesday, speakers from the State Department Office of Defense Trade Controls take the podium and a panel will address designing and maintaining an effective compliance program.

“Every year, this conference provides the opportunity for those in the firearm industry to meet and learn first-hand from the experts in the federal agencies they deal with on a daily basis,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel. “We intend not only to help members of our industry comply with the import/export laws and regulations, but to assist them so that can successfully grow their businesses.”

In addition to the major presenters, also sponsoring the conference are Air Schott/Sea Schott, Allcor Staffing, Magpul Industries, Orchid Advisors, TLR Logistics and TWI Group.
