#gunvote: The ‘Forward’ Momentum of Backward Ideas

With the Democratic convention now concluded, it’s apparent that the slogan “Forward” actually means the Democrats want to move backward with their nostalgia for the anti-gun fervor of the 90s.

First, the Democrats have codified a desire for an ban on modern sporting rifles in their party platform — as we noted in an earlier post. And now Sen. Dianne Feinstein has confirmed that she will lead the charge.

A news article from Southern California public radio proudly proclaims that “Dianne Feinstein announced Wednesday that she’s re-entering the battle over gun control during her keynote speech to the California delegates to the Democratic National Convention . . . She promised California delegates she’d return to Congress to reintroduce ‘an updated assault weapons bill.’”

An “updated” ban surely means an expanded ban, sweeping in millions more of commonly owned firearms, and without the pesky sunset provision that proved the undoing of the original federal ban. There is also no doubt that Feinstein will attempt to be more aggressive in banning ammunition magazines by eliminating any “grandfather” provision.

There is no daylight between Feinstein and Obama on this issue. At the delegates’ breakfast, she said that, “Weapons of war do not belong on our streets, in our classrooms, in our schools or in our movie theatres.” In his most recent remarks, Obama said that semi-automatic rifles “belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals — that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities.” Same rhetoric, same agenda.

And while the national media swooned over another long-winded speech performance by the former president, the rest of us remember that it was President Clinton who fought for and signed the original ban in 1994. Perhaps it is the prospect of resurrecting his signature gun ban law that turned Clinton from an aggressive opponent of Barack Obama in 2008 to a fervid supporter in 2012.

When “forward” actually means “backward,” gun owners know to turn the other direction.

All of you “walnut and blue steel” gun fans, remember that your bolt action rifles are derived from the Mauser brothers’ original designs. They are also “weapons of war”. This assault weapons ruse is merely yhe camel’s nose under the tent.

    • American-American says:

All of our US gun laws are derived from Hitler’s Nazi Weapons Manual.
This can be verified at jpfo.org. I can’t tell if you are a 2A advocate or a gun control advocate by your comment.

I am an active shooter – from a small country in Denmark called Denmark. I love you americans and I respect that you fight for your freedom. But if you compare rates of crime in countries with these countries gun laws you will find – that less gun control always goes hand in hand with more crime. Gosh I hate socialism and what i does to my country – but in Denmark you can leave your sleeping baby alone outside a shop in the pram without any fear – while you do a quick shopping inside. Here everybody can buy a pistol – but only after having been an active shooter for two years. Until that time your gun must stay in the safe of the shooting range. And many shooters prefer to keep their handgun at the range – for the sake of their home safety. Yes people die in my country. But that is from eating too much cheese and drinking too much carlsberg. Have a nice vote – but please look also on the politics of your next president, beside his views on automatic rifles.

@Klaus – Facts do not support your argument. Go to http://www.gunfacts.info and get the real
statistics. Crime rates actually increase in the absence of firearms, not the
other way around (see Illinois and Washington, D.C.) Good to know you feel safe in your country –
but there are other factors at work than gun control. Saddam Hussein kept the streets free from
crime in Iraq, as did Hitler in Nazi Germany.
In Nazi Germany, one could walk the streets any time of day without
being accosted – except for fearing the government. The 2A in the U.S. Constitution affirms that
every person has an inalienable (e.g. God-given) right to protect themselves
and their family. Without the 2A, all
other rights are meaningless and can be usurped.

Gun owners and shooters should not be characterized with any one party. We all have families we would defend with our lives and enjoy shooting sports and hunting in all 50 States and respective US territorries. We are neither “red” nor “blue”, we are all citizens of the US of A. We each hunt with or shoot with or know friends who have different political views than our own and we continue to step into the field during hunting season with them year after year.

The point here is the two primary political parties only have 31% of the voting public…the balance of the US populace or 69% are independent voters with broad views and ideas and do not fall into this Democrat vs. Republican gun control trap. Nothing is so easy as to paint this issue as “red” or “blue” as the voting majority has no clear alignment or political “color”.
